The story of how a harddisk crash destroyed an entire site:

[Story]

“…What happened was that the read heads slipped slightly out of alignment and began what is known as ‘head skip,’ which means that the heads skipped along the platters like a stone across water. Each time they hit the platters, they destroyed a little bit of data (somewhere around 256 bytes). Because they were skipping, they were reading bad data, so the drive attempted to compensate by moving the heads away and back again, which caused the heads to skip into more areas, which the drive then attempted to read from, which moved the head and caused more damage. Given that the drive spins at 7200 RPM, a few hours worth of this type of treatment just completely hosed the drive….”

Time for Action…

Heyo,

It’s time for us to revamp our Company mission statement and vision to reflect our new focus on developing the game, pets and moving to overseas markets. Meeting will be this evening (28 Feb), when Matrix and TY are present.

In other news, we will have a company re-org on Wednesday (1 Mar). There’ll be some table re-shuffling to improve work efficiency for game development (as was discussed at Macs last Wednesday).

So if you’re still up at 5 a.m, what’s your morning snack? (Anyone who sees this can just edit this entry to add theirs.)

Her Highness – Teochew Porridge from geylang!!! No mee sua, teochew porridge also can. Hurhurhur!

(Sic)shot – Lotsa lotsa water

Cervantes de Leonard – Tau Huay (courtesy of Squiggy)

And while you’re at it, vote for the name of the games division. The list is found under the entry called Branding Exercise #1. Pick up to 3. This will help with the elimination process.

A little inspiration to lighten the day

Life in the Googleplex

Work and play can go hand in hand at times. It’s finding the little niche in which the company can fit in. It all boils down to the maturity of the staff and the environment there.

Branding Exercise #1

February 24th, 2006 Leonard Lin 5 comments

Guys, need your opinions on the following stuff:

1. NeoPlanet
As you guys already know, our competitor has branded their cross platform technology exactly the same way we used to present it. After much discussion we came up with a new theme with which to brand both the technology and our game world. It’s a dual meaning so that’s pretty cool.

2. TYLER Games Division
This was brought up several times before. When we launch both the pets and our MMORPG we should have a name other than TYLER to let people remember who made the stuff. Naming the games division will give people something more unique to remember.
Here are some of the names:
1. Liquid Reactor,
2. Heavy Calibre,
3. Hazzard Core,
4. Reload,
5. Duality,
6. Omega Point,
7. Shoo Shine Shack,
8. Games Express.

Please tell us which one you think will be better for our games division.

3. TYLER Pets (currently known as choco-pets)
Should we rename it to “Pinggo-Panggo”? with the 2 mascot characters, one named “Pinggo” and the other named “Panggo”. I’m thinking of using the “malc” pet as “Pinggo”. Panggo sounds like some penguin…
